Camden hosts Young Scottish Dancers Workshop
(part of “Dance Scottish” Week in London).

Twenty four young people from all over Scotland, Wales and England swopped a weekend at home for a Youth Workshop for Scottish Country Dancers held at Cecil Sharp House in Camden. ( 20th Sept)

The workshop for experienced young dancers was part of Dance Scottish Week an initiative of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society to promote interest in Scottish Country Dancing. It was run by teacher Angela Young of Ealing, a talented and very experienced musician and dancer herself. “This is a really good opportunity for young dancers from all over the country to get together, and brush up on all sorts of dance ideas and styles said Angela – its been a real success, we’ve had great fun and hope to repeat it next year.”

“Scottish Country Dancing is great fun and good for your health ” says Chairman Jeff Roberston “ we’re keen to open it up to as many as possible. Dance Scottish Week gave us that opportunity – so why not bring your smiley face to one of our classes or dances. Its for all ages and all abilities."

“DANCE SCOTTISH” IN SCHOOLS

RSCDS HQ has produced a pack to introduce children to their cultural heritage and give them social and physical skills for life by teaching SCD in the classroom as part of the 5-14 curriculum. The new pack contains:

  • A book of 18 popular social dances graded from elementary to advanced, plus teaching advice and a glossary of steps & formations.
  • An audio CD containing music recorded by popular SD bands for teaching and for all the dances.
  • A video illustrating teaching methods and a selection of the dances performed by school pupils.
  • Teachers with no experience of teaching Scottish dance will find this material gives them all the resources and confidence required to enjoy learning along with their pupils.

The pack is available from RSCDS HQ (12 Coates Crescent, Edinburgh EH3 7AF, Scotland, UK) for £35 plus p&p. The Branch has its own copy of this pack which is available in loan to anyone who is interested in teaching Scottish dancing to children.
