Ladies' Step Dance

Teacher: Joan Desborough

 Musician: Wendy Desborough (fiddle)

Step dances differ from Scottish country dances partly because they are usually solo dances.  A step dance requires the dancer to execute a defined sequence of foot movements. The heyday of step dancing in Scotland was from about 1750 for roughly 100 years. Dancing masters would compose dances for their pupils to perform, usually at balls, to demonstrate their skills. The tradition continues and there are also modern step dances.

These classes are for anyone who would like try something a little different.  Sometimes it can feel a little like tongue twisters for the feet, but there is great satisfaction when the feet behave. Whatever your standard of dancing, there will be a challenge accompanied by fun and laughter.

We welcome anyone who wants to come and try step dancing, both women and men. (Read Stephen Webb’s article about this class published in the September issue of “The Reel”).
